How to choose the best speaker?

on August 23, 2023

How to choose the best speaker? This is not a question that has an easy answer, because everything will depend on your own tastes, and the equipment you want to connect it to. Selecting the ones with the appropriate tweeters, midrange, midbass or a certain subwoofer is not easy, since each one has its own functions.

There are users who are just looking for a better speaker so that the music or video they want to listen to sounds better, but there are also demanding people, who are only satisfied with new technologies.

What type of user are you? You will know that when you finish reading this article?

What is a speaker?

speaker

A speaker is an electronic device whose function is to reproduce the sounds that come from an audio source, through an electroacoustic type transducer.

This transducer causes electrical waves to be transformed into mechanical energy, which are then converted into waves that transmit acoustic frequencies so that they propagate through the air.

In this way they reach the receptors of the user's body, which are our ears, where they are captured to be converted into nerve impulses that access the brain, where they are interpreted as sounds.

In other words, they are peripheral devices whose function is to deliver sounds, voices and music to you. However, to know how to choose the best speaker, you need to know all the different types.

Shelf boombox

They are a great option for those looking for lower prices, achieving a remarkable performance. Normally, it is two speakers: one for bass sounds and one for treble sounds. Thanks to their low price, these types of speakers are a fairly affordable option for a larger audience. In addition, its size makes it more practical to transport. However, it must be taken into account that, given these previously mentioned elements, its sound might not turn out to be the best.

Floor boombox

These devices are characterized by having a large size. In fact, they can contain several speakers and two tweeters, which allows them to reproduce high-pitched sounds, and a subwoofer can be included. These speakers are ideal for videos or music.

Even though the combination of speakers ensures superior sound quality, these devices take up too much space which makes them being considered suitable for a home theater.

    Floor subwoofer boombox

With these devices you will achieve a surround and real sound, reproducing a whole range of bass sounds that a conventional speaker would not achieve.

However, you must be careful in their positioning, because they must be placed in a point that is central, in relation to the position of the listeners.

The sound is quite reliable, particularly in the bass, so they are perfect for watching movies or listening to music. Overall, their use tests have been quite favorable.

      Boombox 5.1

These speakers are preferred by multitasking PC users. Those who have a multitasking PC prefer them, thanks to their great sound quality without being too pretentious. They consist of 4 speakers, two on the side and two on rear, and a subwoofer. However, it has a downside and it is the variability of prices in the latest generation models. However, the price varies a lot, since it can go from 35 to 450 USD. Its ease of installation and its remarkable sound make it a favorite among users.

        Boombox 7.1

If price is not a concern for you, 7.1 boomboxes are a high-quality option, thanks to the fact that they can handle Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD pretty well. However, keep in mind that its price is around 450 USD.

In addition to ensuring high-quality sound, these speakers have an additional benefit: ease of installation.

          Soundbars

Sound bars are a small, reasonably priced option. In fact, some come with a 7.1 speaker setup. That is why among its advantages are both its small size and easy installation, with a very acceptable sound quality. However, you should keep in mind that the price may be higher than expected.

            Wireless boombox

They are simple, comfortable, without cables in the middle, and their sound quality is similar to analog. The complexity is that they must be installed very close to the sound source.

What a good speaker looks like?

            speaker

We know that you want to know how you can choose the best speaker, which is why we are going to tell you what are the main characteristics that you should consider:

            Frequency Response

It is a value that is related to the quality of the sounds that reach the ears of human beings and is measured by different levels of audio frequency ranging from 20 to 20,000Hz. In this sense, you should know that the higher the frequency response, the higher the quality of the final sound

will also be. However, it is not a value that is completely flat. You are not going to have the same response with high-pitched and low-pitched sounds, so it is very important that there is not a big difference in decibels, in order to avoid distortions.

            Power

It is related to the electrical power that the speaker is capable of withstanding, which is measured in watts. You should not confuse it with acoustic power. In fact, if a speaker receives a lot of power, it is normal for it to suffer damage or have a lot of distortion in the output. Power is measured in two ways:

Nominal Power: it is the maximum power that the speaker can take. If the device receives a power greater than its nominal power, it will not be able to dissipate all the heat it will receive, which can deteriorate it.

Admissible Power: are the signal peaks that a speaker will be able to bear for short periods of time, before the inner diaphragm is damaged.

            Impedance

It is the opposition that the sound receives when it is transmitted by alternating current. It is measured in ohms and varies depending on the frequency and the speaker model. It is necessary that the impedances between the sound source, which is the amplifier, and the speaker, are as similar as possible, to have a better result.

            Sensibility

It is what measures the relationship between the amount of electricity from the input of the speaker and the pressure that is obtained from the sound produced, and is measured in DB/W at a distance of one meter.

            Performance

            speaker

It refers to the degree of sensitivity of the speaker. Performance is measured by the ratio of input electrical power to radiated acoustic power. This relationship is established in a ratio of 1-5%, so that if 100W enters the speaker, it will output 1-5W.

            Distortion

This is one of the most relevant features, because it is what can ruin or make any Audio Car System shine. You have to be especially careful with vibrations or air gap flow, which can immediately be noticed for its bass sounds.

            Directionality

As its name implies, it is what determines the direction the sound will take in acoustic waves from the speakers. From the output, the sound direction can be divided into three:

            • Omnidirectional: radiating 360º.
            • Bidirectional: Sound waves travel symmetrically.
            • Unidirectional: the waves spread in only one direction, decreasing the loudness.

            Conclusions

There are various elements that must be taken into account to know how to choose the best speaker, price being one of the most important, although not the most decisive. However, if you have some slack in that regard, you can get an excellent product.

In a middle line, we can say that floor-standing subwoofers should be preferred, as they offer the best sound without much hassle, at a reasonable price.

In cases where price is not a limitation, a 7.1 speaker or a sound bar may be what you are looking for, to give you the features you require, in terms of sound.

Now that you know the types of speakers and their main characteristics, you can make an informed decision when purchasing them.
